Steve Lukather wins fifth Eddy Christiani Award
On Saturday April 3, 2010 the fifth Eddy Christiani Award will be presented. Guitarist Steve Lukather will receive the award during the prize’s first lustrum. Five time Grammy winner Steve Lukather is known worldwide for his versatile, creative and sublime way of playing the guitar as Toto’s guitarist, as a studio musician and in his solo projects.
The Eddy Christiani Award is an initiative of poppuntzeeland and is presented every year to a guitarist who has won his spurs within the international pop business and who has delivered an inspiring contribution to the development of electrical guitar music. Previous winners of the award include Leendert Haaksma (2006), Dany Lademacher (2007), Adrian Vandenberg (2008) and Jan Akkerman (2009).
Steve “Luke” Lukather was born on October 21, 1957 in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. Inspired by the Beatles album “Meet the Beatles”, Steve Lukather taught himself to play the guitar at age seven with help of an acoustic guitar his father bought him. In high school “Luke” met Steve Porcaro and later on Jeff Porcaro and David Paich. Jeff Porcaro set himself up as a mentor for Steve.
Subsequently Steve Lukather grew into a competent studio musician. This development led to an invitation by Paich and Porcaro to join the band Toto together with Bobby Kimball and David Hungate. In 1977 Toto released their first album named ‘’Toto’’, which became an instant success. The year 1982 was a commercial success for Toto and Steve Lukather with their album Toto IV featuring the classic hits “Rosanna” and “Africa” reaching platinum status. In that same year Toto cooperated on Michael Jackson’s album ‘’Thriller”, which became the most successful album ever with over 50 million copies sold. Salient detail: Lukather plays both guitar and bass parts on this album. Toto has sold over 30 million records worldwide.
Lukather produced his first solo album in 1989. This album called ‘’Lukather’’ and his next album “Candyman” feature several of his musician friends. In the following years Lukather released more (solo) albums including the Grammy winning ‘’No Substitutions’’. This live-album featured a registration of a tour in Japan with jazz guitarist Larry Carlton. In 2008 Steve Lukather decided to quit the band Toto and continue his impressive career as a solo artist. In 2009 Lukather was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. He has played on over 1200 records with everyone from Paul McCartney to Miles Davis and everything in between. At this very moment Steve, who is in top shape, is very busy recording a new album in Los Angeles that will be released this fall.
Poppuntzeeland is very proud to receive guitar legend Steve Lukather. On April 3 he will perform after the traditional Bandstafette together with the keyboard player with roots in Zeeland Jeroen Rietbergen, bass player Michel van Schie and drummer Ton Dijkman. These popular musicians accompany artists like Marco Borsato, Jan Akkerman, Trijntje Oosterhuis, etc.
