Main technical project(s): Environmental service learning programs in the United Arab Emirates: Impacts on environmental awareness and civic engagement
E. Associate Professor United Arab Emirate University (2005 -2007, Assistant from 2002-2005).
Area of expertise: Environmental Sciences, Environmental Impact Assessment, marine sciences, water resources, desert landscape, natural hazards, natural resource development. Administrative: supervisor for UAEU Environment Society, Coordinator for several University Committees; served as General Secretary for the 6th International Conference of the Geosciences of the Middle East, and on the advisory board of the Gulf Seismic Forum and others as well. Taught courses at College of Science, College of Engineering and College of Humanities. Taught at the Civil Engineering the following courses: Surface Water Hydrology, Water Resources, and Geomorphology, and taught at the College of Science: Environmental Sciences
Main technical project(s): Leading five major projects:
1. Environmental evaluation of Abu Dhabi Sabkhas/ salt marches (for potential presences of economic minerals, for harvesting solar energy, as being a source of unconventional hydrocarbon, for the health of associated mangrove ecosystems, for temporal and spatial variations of physical landscape, for investigating the impact of land use on this environment, for being as a model extraterrestrial applications ..etc ). I have formed and coordinated a team from UAEU Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and other from UK, USA, and Italy. This project demonstrates my ability to manage large projects involving staff with diverse backgrounds and skills.
2. I have directed an Evapotranspiration mapping project that focuses on Al Ain area of Abu Dhabi Emirates . The projects involve ET estimation using traditional methods and remote sensing based methods. The main tasks included vegetation survey, GIS mapping, metrological data collection, statistical analyses..etc.
3. I have directed programs on environmental monitoring of contaminants and associated impacts on ecological receptors. The emphasis were on dams/ coastal water of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, soil of Al Ain, Groundwater of Abu Dhabi..etc.
4. I have headed a team that investigated sand dunes migrations and pathways in UAE
5. I have studied and evaluated water and sediment environmental data of the late Mesopotamian Marshes of Iraq for restoration purposes. In this project we established the environmental background of the area necessary for species recovery of small invertebrates, fish, and bird species.
During these projects various forms of interactions with various ministries and municipalities took place, and the projects itself included environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to policy planners, decision makers, scientists and environmentalists, researchers, academicians and other stakeholders.
F. Research Scientist, Texas A&M Agricultural Research and Extension Center, El Paso (2000 -2002).
Area of expertise: outreach and extension services, arid land hydrology, irrigation performance, remote sensing and GIS mapping of salinity and salt-affected, soil managements, water conservation practices, heavy metal assessment, remote sensing, groundwater, reuse and disposal of reused water for both agricultural and engineering applications.
Main technical project(s): Mapping salt-affected soils and associated environmental factors (water quality, vegetation health, ..etc) in the Rio Grande Basin using remote sensing and GIS approach. I was responsible for leading a team of eight research associates that are responsible for image classification, GPS survey, staking, soil and riparian habitat mapping. My team modeled salts and water transport in semi-arid rivers, salt storage and release in and from riparian zones of a semi-arid river and impact of green landscape and nearby farms. We used comprehensive and well-structured data sets, models (geospatial analysis and applications development using geographic information
systems (GIS) that describe physicochemical processes or implement decision methodologies, and data analysis and visualization tools to reveal and present new insights from environmental research studies. I described and presented this major research program in several publications.

Area of expertise: environmental management, conservation, environmental education, public involvement, environmental awareness in the US-Mexico border, watershed and river basin hydrological studies and modeling (focus on Rio Grande Basin), management of environmental databases (USGS-NURE data).
Main technical project(s):
1. Coordinated ExtendSim modeling tasks of the Transboundary Resource Inventory Management project (TRIM). TRIM is a binational WWW site that provides a search engine and portals for natural resources information along the border of United States and Mexico. This site would be a user-friendly conduit to registered web sites.
2. Coordinated the ExtendSim modeling tasks of US/Mexico Border Environmental Infrastructure Needs Assessment. This project provides a summary of demand and estimated costs for potable water, collection and treatment of sewage, and solid waste management. The results of this effort will serve to help prioritize projects and better identify areas of critical infrastructure needs.
