Dear Sir,

Harshavardhan Prakashana has made a name in Karnataka by Publishing Prof.(Dr.) G.V.Kulkarni's kyu (Jeevi's) two important books, viz.

NA KANDA BENDRE- Jeevana Mattu Sahitya

NA KANDA GOKAK- Jeevana Mattu Sahitya

Dr.D.R.Bendre who wrote under the pen-name 'Ambikatanayadatta' was a 'poet of poets.' and one of the pioneers in the renaissance period of Kannada literature. Dr.V.K.Gokak who was the disciple of Bendre was a great critic and the author of 'Bharata Sindhu Rashmi' ,one of the most significant epics of modern Kannada literature. Both were recipients of Bharatiya Jnan Pith award, the Nobel Prize of India.

Poet Jeevi spent his student days in Dharwad. Bendre and Gokak blessed him as they were his mentors. Critics and scholars have hailed Jeevi's books on Bendre and Gokak as unique contributions to Kannada literatures. Taranga wrote " Jeevi has made a work of literary criticism as absorbing as a piece of poetry and as delightful as a story." Jeevi throws new light on the writings of these two literary giants by juxtaposing biographical elements and intimate interviews and interactions. He has used rare material from his diaries, notes and recorded tapes.

To this series he is adding a new volume, "SAHASRAMAANA KAVI BENDRE".

He has interviewed some important persons who knew Bendre intimately. This book contains some rare material and throws new light on Bendre as a Poet, Philosopher, Scientist, and a Householder. This book will be a collector's item for the ardent lovers of Bendre.

Jeevi wants to make this book most attractive with excellent printing and layout. He wants to print some rare color photographs and paintings too. As this is an expensive endeavour, we want you to become well-wishers, patrons and grand-patrons of this publication and support the cause. We shall acknowledge your support and send you all our publications.

We appeal to associations and corporate bodies to support our cause.

TAKING YOGA TO THE MASSES - A Project

Science always treated the human body as a machine. When the body was sick the doctors repaired it as a mechanic would do with a machine. But we should not forget that the human body has a mind and a spirit.

Now the modern medicine has recognized the existence of the mind which plays havoc in the lives of people. It may take some more time for it to recognize the existence of spirit. But Indian rishis, sages and traditional doctors always treated the mind and the spirit when they treated a sick body. The great sage Patanjali is saluted by a host of sages as he was the only sage who wrote a grammar book to remove the malam(mistakes) in the speech, wrote a book on Ayurveda to remove the malam(diseases) in the body, and wrote Yogasutrs to remove the malam(stress) of the chitta(mind). Yogasutras include the yogasanas which not only keep the body physically fit but also retain the healthy mind and spirit which form the basis of a healthy body.

It is a matter of disgrace that we Indians who have such a rich heritage have become alien to our own treasures and lead an impoverished life. 'Yoga a day keeps doctor away' can be a reality in our life. Ask those who have made Yoga a way of life. When we address an audience, if we were to ask them a question, "How many of you practice Yogasanas everyday?", there will be hardly any one to raise his/her hand. When you go to villages the condition is still worse. At least there are some yoga classes conducted in the cities. Most of our successful Yoga teacher have become more popular abroad and their eye is more on the 'pelf-satisfaction' rather than 'self-satisfaction. Our education system wants to make sex-education compulsory to the children but they have never thought of making Yoga as a compulsory subject in the school curricula.

After successfully conducting Yoga-Shibras for teachers who were students of K.L.E.Society's college of Education, Hubli and leading doctors of Hubli (Karnataka state) I have thought of a plan to reach the masses in the villages of Karnataka State. The best way of educating the masses can be through the teachers of primary and secondary schools. We should invite and select 50 to 100 teachers from various districts and talukas of Karnataka and give them seven-days training in Yoga and Naturopathy. This can be in Dr. Sharma Institute of Naturopathy and Yogic Science,Hubli. The institute will provide us free accommodation and we will have to spend for the food and travelling of the teachers. The teachers should be given free booklets, Neti-pots to be distributed in their villages. They should select 50 families in their village or small towns. Father-Mother-son(daughter) make a unit of the family. They should train them in the minimum Yoga-literacy program provided by us. Bring selected 5 to 10 best teams(families) after six months of training ,for demonstration of Yogasanans. The days fixed for this function will be 30th September and May 18th of every year.

All the participants will be provided free food on that day. They may have to bear their travelling expenses. The best units will be given prizes. We will bear the travelling expenses of the teachers. This training program can be extended to the nearby states like Maharashtra and Telugudesham.

Unless we make a beginning in this direction we can't achieve the goal to make the masses of our country aware of the goodness of Yoga. or associations.

Printing and publishing of the workshop material is equally expensive. If the booklets are to be priced they will have to be subsidized.

We appeal to individuals, associations and corporate bodies to support our cause.

"We have time, do you have inclination ?"

asks Yogajeevi Dr. G. V. Kulkarni.

Prof.(Dr,) G.V.Kulkarni, popularly known as 'Jeevi', was born in Domnal (Bjapur dist., Karnataka State) on 10-6-1937. He had his schooling at Gadag and college education at Dharwad. He was the Fellow of the J.S.S. College and a merit scholar at the Karnatak University Dharwad. He got his B. A. and M. A. degrees with Kannada and Sanskrit and a Law degree from the Karnatak university.

He went to Bombay in 1960 and took up teaching career. He got M. A. degree in English literature from Mumbai university in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1995. The topic of his doctoral thesis was SRI AUROBINDO'S INFLUENCE ON THE WRITINGS OF VINAYAK KRISHNA GOKAK.

'Jeevi' has published five poem collections, 12 one-act-plays, one short story collection, and a novel, two critical works in Kannada on his mentors and Bharatiya Jnan Pitha awardees, Dr. D. R. Bendre and Dr, V. K. Gokak. He has published an anthology of poems (MUSINGS) in English.

He has translated from Sanskrit 'Sri Nrusimha stuti', 'Sri Vayu stuti' into English and Kannada verse.

Jeevi was introduced to Yoga by Yogacharya B. K. S. Iyengar ( Pune) and Hathayogi Nikam Guruji of Ambika Yoga Kutir, Thane(Mumbai). He studied Naturopathy under Dr. B .K. Bolar, Director, Indian Institute of Drugless Therapy, Mumbai. He got inspirition by the writings of Saint Asaaram Bapu and Naturopath Shri Vithaldas Modi. He was initiated by Dr. M B. Rahalkar in the field of spiritual healing.

After retirement in 1997, Prof. Kulkarni took up the cause of 'Holistic Approach to Health'. He has toured Karnataka and Maharashtra and addressed students in schools and colleges. He has delivered talks at various cultural and social organizations like Lions, Rotarians and Giants.

According to him Yoga and Naturopathy are two faces of the same coin. He says that opening more medical colleges and establishing sophisticated hospitals will only help the growth of pharmaceutical industry and fill the coffers of multinationals. Today health through medication has become a luxury for the common man. Most of the health hazards are due to the modern lifestyle which compels us to drift away from Nature. Only Yoga can handle the deadly STRESS of modern life. Today we need 'Bare-foot doctors' with thorough knowledge of all the preventive methods which are provided by Yoga and Nature-cure.

Prof.(Dr.) Kulkarni prepared YOGA-SHIBIRA (Yoga-Workshop) material for his student-friend, a busy supreme court advocate whose life was filled with stress, strain and hectic cerebral activity. The program was revised and improved for the benefit of students and housewives.

The first Yoga-Shibira was conducted for three days (20th, 21st and 22nd Feb.2000) for the staff and students of K. L. E. Society's College of Education. The venue was Prof. K. S. Sharma Institute of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, Gokul Road Hubli- 580020 (India).

The second Yoga-shibira was organized at the invitation of a reputed ophthalmologist Dr. M.M.Joshi for the benefit of leading doctors of Hubli from 20th to 27th April,2000 at Medical Research Center.

'Jeevi' was invited to U.S.A. to attend and participate in the World Millennium Kannada Conference held at Houston (1,2,3 sept.). He has visited Dallas, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington D.C., Philadelphia Calgary(Canada), and California. Apart from speaking on literature, specially on the life and works of Mahakavi D.R.Bendre and Dr.V.K.Gokak and reciting his own poems, he has been talking on a popular subject, viz. HEALTH AT NO COST. He has conducted three-day Yoga-Workshops at most of the places. One can find Yoga-Shibira material on the web site <www.pclink.com/raghukul>.

"We have time, do you have inclination ?" asks Yogajeevi Dr. G. V. Kulkarni to all those who are interested in learning basics of Yoga. One can contact him on his e-mail address, Send this information to your friends. This may motivate them and help them to transform into a Yoga-jeevi.
